How it works in the books
Some payments are current expenses, while others create assets, reduce liabilities, or represent owner activity. The correct classification depends on what the payment was for and the accounting policy.
Example
A monthly software subscription is typically recorded as an expense for the month it covers.
What can go wrong
The fact that cash left the bank does not by itself make the payment an expense.
