Reconciliation

Duplicate transaction

A duplicate transaction is the same economic event recorded more than once.

How it works in the books

Duplicates often come from overlapping imports, adding a bank-feed item after a manual entry, or recording a transfer as both an expense and a transfer.

Example

A $1,200 rent payment entered manually and then added again from the bank feed overstates rent by $1,200.

What can go wrong

Similar amount and date are clues, not proof. Recurring legitimate charges should not be deleted without source evidence.
