Methods

Double-entry bookkeeping

Double-entry bookkeeping records every transaction with equal debits and credits across at least two accounts.

How it works in the books

The system keeps the accounting equation connected and supports a general ledger, trial balance, balance sheet, and income statement. Most accounting software uses double entry behind the interface.

Example

Paying a $500 vendor bill reduces cash by $500 and reduces accounts payable by $500.

What can go wrong

Balanced debits and credits prove arithmetic balance, not that the accounts or business purpose are correct.
